Imaging leak testing (Shearoseal)

Development of an imaging and mass-suitable procedure for a leak test that can be assigned within seconds in the fields of medical and food technology (Shearoseal)

Project number: 21951 N

Project duration

From: 01.08.2021 To: 31.12.2022

Description

It has been shown that a commercial shearography system together with a vacuum chamber is suitable for testing various test specimens for leaks. The required negative pressures are in the low two-digit millibar range. The advantage of this imaging method is that several samples can be tested simultaneously and a statement can still be made about each one. Packaging from the food, pharmaceutical and medical technology sectors, such as cereal bar packaging or packaged disposable syringes, were examined. Several evaluation algorithms were tested to quantify the measurement results. It was shown that a reliable and fast automatic differentiation of leaky and non-leaky samples is possible and that a reference measurement series can also be used to infer the leak rate. In addition to the automatic evaluation of the tightness, a procedure for the automatic object recognition of samples to be tested was also developed, so that the complete test procedure from the insertion of the test specimens into the chamber to the output of the results can be completely user-independent. Measurements with a test setup that is highly simplified in terms of its range of functions and thus very cost-effective in perspective show that leak testing is also possible with this setup, although it does not allow leak tightness to be quantified with the evaluation algorithms tested.
