Accelerated Pipe-Permeation
Determining the permeation properties of pipes currently takes several days to weeks. The desire for shorter development times and faster quality control contrasts with these time-consuming tests.
The aim of this research project is to establish an accelerated method for determining the permeation of plastic pipes, reducing the measurement time to a few hours or days. For this purpose, chips are removed from the pipes and the permeation properties are determined using standard measuring methods on film-like samples. Correlations will be systematically analysed by comparing measurements on pipes and chips according to different standards and using a He-rapid-test developed at SKZ. This is an important step in the acceleration of the determination of the barrier properties of plastic pipes.
The measurement methodology to be developed will enable simplified and improved quality control for potential users in the plastic pipe industry. It will also open up a new field of application for established measurement methods on foils or flat test specimen, which will benefit the SME testing institutes
