Defying storms: SKZ tests components for hail resistance

In recent years, the frequency and intensity of hailstorms has increased worldwide. In Germany, too, there has been considerable damage. The use of hail-resistant building materials should reduce this in the future. The testing division of SKZ has also taken up this necessary precaution and tests building components for hail resistance in accordance with DIN EN 13583.

With natural disasters on the rise, building protection is increasingly important

Extreme weather caused insured losses of 4.3 billion euros in Germany alone last year, according to the German Insurance Association (GDV) in Berlin. While the GDV classifies 2022 as an "average year for natural hazards," it says that insurance alone is often no longer enough. Given this worrying trend, only effective prevention can protect against the devastating effects of hail.

Hail difficult to predict
Among natural hazards, hail is regularly at the top of the damage list. Hail is a weather phenomenon that occurs at very short notice and is difficult to predict. It not only threatens vehicles and agricultural crops, but can also cause significant damage to buildings. To effectively counter this threat, more and more experts are focusing on preventive protection measures and the use of hail-resistant building materials.

SKZ makes a decisive contribution to prevention
SKZ's Testing division, based in Würzburg, Germany, has made a name for itself in this field. As an accredited testing laboratory, the company has state-of-the-art testing equipment and highly qualified employees who use their expertise in the service of safety. For example, SKZ tests roofing membranes and other building components for hail resistance according to DIN EN 13583. These tests ensure that building materials can withstand the extreme stresses caused by hail and effectively protect buildings. In doing so, the company is making a significant contribution to minimizing damage and increasing safety in a world increasingly affected by extreme weather events.
