The SKZ Plastics Center in Würzburg, Germany, has two new welding systems. This opens up new possibilities for joining technology, such as joining transparent thermoplastics using laser-based quasi-simultaneous welding and highly automated hot plate welding. This opens up new opportunities for future projects.

Researchers at the SKZ Plastics Center are excited about new technology in the field of thermal plastic joining. The new additions are the Evo1800 laser welding system from Evosys Laser GmbH and the HWT 400 CS workshop system from Hürner Schweißtechnik GmbH for hot plate welding. With these state-of-the-art machines, the institute in Würzburg is expanding its possibilities for research projects and training activities. This will help to ensure that the latest knowledge is acquired and passed on in a timely manner. In this way, customers and course participants remain at the cutting edge of technology.
Transparent plastic parts can be joined
Both welding systems offer the scientists, technicians and instructors at the SKZ many new possibilities. For example, the Evo1800 can weld with two lasers of different wavelengths (980 and 1940 nm). This expands the range of weldable plastics so that even transparent plastic parts can now be joined. In addition to the standard contour welding process, the new laser welding system also enables quasi-simultaneous welding. This approach allows for shorter process times and more extensive process monitoring when the part geometry is suitable.
High quality and powerful technology
The HWT 400 also offers SKZ exciting possibilities in the field of hot plate welding, as the machine is characterized by high-quality and powerful technology. "The HWT 400 is the luxury car and not the compact car in hot plate welding. The numerous degrees of freedom in setting and operating options are ideal for our activities," explains Dr. Gernot Hochleitner, group manager for thermal joining at SKZ. At the same time, the high degree of automation requires very controlled process management in terms of time, temperature and pressure - and thus lays the foundation for reproducible joining results at a high level. "This allows us to offer our customers better solutions and modern training with brand-new technologies," says Hochleitner.Hochwertige und leistungsstarke Technik
Joining has a decades-long tradition at SKZ
Joining has a decades-long tradition at SKZ - and the expertise is correspondingly high. The latest technology enables the plastics experts to create real innovations, especially in research. The same applies to the subsequent transfer of knowledge to industry via the institute's training activities.
