Rising energy costs pose major challenges for some manufacturing companies. The SKZ Plastics Center and injection moulding machine manufacturer Dr. Boy therefore jointly organized a seminar on 25 April that focused on energy efficiency in the injection moulding process in times of high energy prices. The event offered a successful mix of theoretical lectures and practical demonstrations.

The question of how the injection molding process can be designed to be energy-efficient in times of high energy prices has been on the minds of many manufacturing companies, and not just since energy prices have risen significantly in recent years. For this reason, the SKZ and Dr. Boy organized a free information seminar on 25 April 2024 on the premises of the SKZ training center in Horb am Neckar to show various solutions on how the injection molding process can be made more energy-efficient. The seminar, which was held under the motto “Energy-efficient, super-compact, productivity-enhancing production and reducing the CO2 footprint”, met with broad interest from regional companies looking for practical and economical solutions to reduce their energy costs.
Funding opportunities highlighted
One topic of the seminar was mold temperature control, which offers considerable potential for reducing costs. The correct temperature control of tools in the injection molding process can significantly reduce energy consumption and thus sustainably lower operating costs. In addition, funding opportunities were highlighted that can support companies in implementing energy-efficient measures.
Positive influence on the profitability of companies
Dipl.-Ing. Robert Schmitt, Managing Director Certification at SKZ, presented ways in which energy management systems can not only help to identify and eliminate energy leaks, but also have a positive impact on the profitability of companies. “DIN EN 50001 only contains nine pages with specific requirements for such systems and can be very easily integrated into existing systems,” said Schmitt.
Presentation of efficient machine settings
In the following practice-oriented part, efficient machine settings and process optimizations were presented. The participants benefited from a practical approach and the demonstration of various tools that are integrated into the ALPHA control systems. This not only made it possible to illustrate the optimization of energy consumption. The participants also got a good impression of how a modern control system can help to find efficient and economical parameter sets.
Presentation of monetary savings
In addition to presentations and tests on the running machines, calculations on monetary savings were also presented. The event was characterized by a successful mix of theory and practice. Expert presentations were supplemented by practical demonstrations that showed participants concrete solutions and measures for saving energy.
“Important contribution to promoting energy efficiency in the plastics industry”
"The event once again highlighted the relevance of the topic and the industry's great interest in sustainable and cost-efficient solutions. With the energy seminar, we were able to provide valuable insights and practical solutions on how companies can make their injection molding processes energy-efficient and save costs at the same time. With this event, the SKZ and Dr. Boy have made an important contribution to promoting energy efficiency in the plastics industry,” says Jürgen Kern, Site Manager of the SKZ Plastics Center in Horb am Neckar.
Simple measures
One participant in the seminar summarized the day's findings: “I wasn't aware that quite simple measures could have such an effect. It's interesting to know that the base price for the entire year depends on a single performance peak (determined at ¼-hour intervals)."
